MOVING STREETS

STREETSCAPE DESIGN

Location: Haikou, China

Client: Haikou Government

Streets are public spaces that host the flows of people, systems, plants, AND cars. These flows are not static. Like a river, there are high flows and calm moments. Throughout the day, week, season and year each can host a variety of activities and still easily accommodate peak traffic moments at certain moments.

The embracing of the rhythms of the variety of flows allows for a more dynamic design for our future streets. We can use contemporary technology to allow for more modular, flexible, and assembling furniture’s that can enhance our cultural, environmental, and technological spatial wishes.

This may seem ‘new’, but in fact this idea traces back to the way Chinese society always used streets. They were always places for people, food, bikes, etc. Places to move and flow, but spaces to meet, greet and come together.

The contemporary quality of our designs is how we use colors and plants to embrace the qualities of each place, while also using patterns to encourage drivers to take notice of their fellow citizens walking, biking and sitting in their community.

Further, our proposals embrace the many systems of contemporary streets, not just cars and people; but also flows of water, ecology, energy, food networks, recycling, high tech networks, and cultural habitats.

Ultimately our designs embrace the full spectrum of what streets are about. We celebrate this diversity and use it to give visual celebration of this full reality of our shared contemporary urban habitats.
