Interim Interface

Interim Interface

Hong Kong and Singapore are modern cities with long roots. These often leave ‘gaps’ or opportunities within the city fabric. Alleys and other small scale interim moments define much of the urban character in Hong Kong. Bamboo scaffolding is a great illustration of the potential of leveraging gaps as interfaces between buildings and ‘the city’. Can we ‘mind the gaps’ and reinterpret these as interim interfaces throughout Hong Kong? These could serve a series of needs in our dynamic city; ranging from affordable housing, cultural expression, storage, etc. This could generate a thickened layer within the existing urban form that could aim to solve some of the challenges. as well as enhance the role of the city as an ongoing performance through shared spaces.
