Guangzhou is adding an new CBD on its eastern edge. The historic island of Pazhou will be a key high density mixed use transit hub linking to the new growth. The Urban Design Master Plan was done to break from the traditional assumptions of development in the region. The plan vastly intensified and diversified the types of transport movements to and through the area. The design leveraged the historic qualities of the area to provide a new series of diverse public spaces oriented towards the long waterfront, as well as protect the community from rising sea levels, as well as put a high priority on maintaining historic waterfront communities and setting a framework for their evolution.
